Claire Hanna (B.A. Design),
creative director

Claire’s creative journey started in Perth, graduating from Curtin University with a Bachelor of Design in 1997.

With a taste for international graphic design, Claire relocated to London where she created designs for top-shelf brands such as the Financial Times and Citigroup.

Brimming with creative inspiration and international experience, Claire returned to Perth in 2002 and worked as Senior Graphic Designer for established graphic design firms.

She quickly made an impact by creating powerful designs, installations and exhibitions for numerous esteemed clients including Woodside, New Norcia, Christ Church Grammar School and Penrhos College.

With a desire to create an intimate yet internationally trained studio in her home town, Claire established qalam design in Victoria Park in 2003. As Creative Director, she has built the company into one of Perth’s leading multi-faceted graphic design consultancies, creating aesthetic solutions to all conceptual challenges.

Joh House (B.A. Arts),
senior graphic designer and illustrator

Joh’s story began in Sydney 2001, as an ambitious COFA student. Aching to apply her conceptual training to a profitable day job she established herself as a talented graphic designer and evocative commercial illustrator, commissioned by the likes of Black + White Magazine and Australian Harper’s Bazaar.

In Sydney she acquired diverse experience in both art and graphic design categories: designing for streetpress, 3D World and style magazine, Oyster; curating gallery spaces; developing fashion campaigns for Country Road; and creating political campaigns for the Greens party.

With London calling in 2004, Joh sketched her way around the UK and worked for leading publishing agency, Publicis Blueprint. Here she designed graphic communications for clients such as Debenham’s Department Store, Toni & Guy and Travel Britain.

Back in Perth, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Curtin University and a wealth of local and international creative knowledge, Joh is proud to be working with Claire, and making tea, at Qalam Design.
